Verbalizing the Intention

Translated from Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen's

(rahimahullah) explanation of "Zaad al-Mustaqni'

Issue: Verbalizing the intention

The Shaykh said:

And that which is correct is that it should not be verbalized, and that verbalizing it is an innovation which is prohibited. This is proved by the fact that the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) and his Companions never verbalized the intention at all and nothing regarding this is preserved from them.  So verbalizing it is an innovation whether in prayer, zakaat or fasting. As for hajj then it is not reported from the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) that he used to say, have intended to perform hajj or I have intended to perform such and such a rite.  Rather he used to make the talbiyah of hajj by which the intention becomes apparent, however the resolve of intention preceded the talbiyah.
